WHY DOES THE HEART BEAT?
The heart beats or pumps to circulate
blood round the body and it is really a
double pump. The left-hand side of the
heart pumps pure blood to all parts
of the body. This blood supplies the body
with oxygen and carries away the harm-
ful gas called carbon dioxide. It is then
impure blood and passes to the right-
hand portion of the heart, which pumps
it through the lungs. There it obtains
a fresh supply of oxygen, from the air
we are breathing in, and gets rid of its
carbon dioxide in the air we are breathing
out. From the lungs the blood returns to
the left-hand side of the heart. When
running, for example, we use up oxygen
much faster and the heart beats quicker
to maintain the supply.
